When we face a situation that prompts us to feel disturbed and threatened, we call that the feeling of anxiety. We get anxious if we didn’t see things coming and when it’s there we are totally at a loss on what to do. The same feeling comes out when you are anticipating a situation to happen and your stimuli produces a negative response or you run away from it.
We always tend to associate the feeling of anxiety with a negative or unwanted feeling. While that may be true, anxiety should be dealt with proper self-control and rational thinking. One thing all of us should understand is that we cannot run away from this feeling because at one point in our life we all get anxious over something. It could either be the problems that are putting too much weight on our lives or any other situation that poses danger and causes us to feel fear. That is why medical experts refer to anxiety as a ‘chronic’ fear, since this is what we feel every time we are put in a situation where fear starts creeping in into every nerve of our body and your instinct tells you danger is close by.
The Subconscious Mind
The many causes or triggers of anxiety result to the feeling of anxiety or worse, anxiety attacks. A person is triggered or prompted to feel anxious when an unusual or disturbing situation arises that could possibly pose danger or negative consequences. The past experiences of an individual which are stored in the subconscious mind, whether good or bad, may be associated with these causes. For example, if a person had a bad experience in the past and encounters a similar situation at present, the subconscious mind connects the situations and will prompt the person to react the same way as in the previous circumstance. If the previous feeling toward that past experience was fear, most likely it is the same emotion the person will feel once the situation occurs in the future.
Factors of Anxiety Triggers
The triggers of anxiety may be rooted from a lot of external factors. One of which is change and these changes can be about different aspects of life such as job change, relocation, quality of living and lifestyle, etc. In the workplace, for instance, a regular employee who is offered a promotion may not feel comfortable with the thought of additional workload or tasks and a bigger responsibility. The feeling of anxiety starts out from these thoughts because there is fear building up along with these thoughts instead of accepting it as a challenge or on a more positive side, take it as self-appreciation for the hard work. Even getting late at work may trigger this emotion to build up.
Another factor includes relationship issues such as separation, divorce, getting fired, and the like. In the case of professionals, if you committed a failure in your work, you can’t help but keep on entertaining unwanted thoughts of being fired, or demoted, or suspended. Some professional individuals don’t dare face the situation. Rather, they opt for a less amenable option of searching for another job to prepare for the possible risk of losing their work. Other factors are bad experiences that are recurring, unexpected circumstances, and problems about health, money and other things.
Anxiety Disorder
When the feeling of anxiety arises, there is a tendency that an anxious individual may suffer from anxiety disorder. A person who worries too much about the situation and anticipates a negative outcome is prone to having the disorder.Anxiety disorders result from an extreme feeling of being anxious, different from the normal anxiety feeling over a typical situation. Phobias are examples of anxiety disorder. We all have our own fears, but not knowing how to face those fears would lead to a chronic feeling of anxiety.
Another type of anxiety disorder is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). People who are obsessive-compulsive always tend to feel uncomfortable over a routine or a habitual process that is messed up. Traumatic events or experiences trigger anxiety disorder, too. Then again, the subconscious mind will play a major part in the building up of this feeling.
