Sir Francis Bacon popularized essay writing in the late 16th century. An essay is a short prose composition that explains a subject or suggests an argument from the viewpoint of author. Subject matter in essay writing is as wide ranging as the imagination of the author of the piece. This minor literary form of composition is not as formal as an academic dissertation and is based on the author’s subjective experiences. Authors who have popularized the essay are D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell and E.B. White.
Although essay writing is somewhat informal, there is an art to this literary form all to itself. Essays are commonly given as writing assignments in higher learning institutions with students expected to present and express personal points of view within a structure. An essay begins with a strong introductory sentence that demonstrates the subject matter and is then supported throughout the rest of the composition with logical argument, followed by a summary paragraph at the end of the work. In essay writing, the opening sentence is the most important part of the work, it is meant to seize the reader’s attention for further reading.
